“You are not in the mountains, the mountains are within you.” John Muir
My name is Emily Ruth, but you can call me Em.
Let me start by saying I genuinely love what I do. Over the past 7 years my teaching, as well as my own practice, has grown in a way I couldn’t have imagined. Sharing that with others, cultivating connection and community, has been an integral part of the journey, and something I am so unbelievably grateful for.
I thrive in the outdoors, adventuring into the mountains no matter the season; from clear crisp skies and the warmth of sun kissed skin, to getting drenched in a downpour and the feeling of arriving home to warm cup of tea. Along the way there are adventures, lot of mis-adventures and everything in between.
For me, yoga and the mountains compliment each other in a natural way - both multifaceted. They ask you to be physically and mentally strong yet soft, to notice the landscapes and undulations both outwardly and within, and they connect us to something bigger than ourselves, something that has been forgotten in the noise of modern society.
Throughout the years I’ve explored many styles of yoga and movement within my personal practice. From traditional yoga in the Himalayas, to learning how to recover from injuries, to diving into the anatomy, and mechanics of the human body through strength training and massage. Being guided by different teachers and methodologies has given me a breadth of understanding that bolsters the choices I make in teaching. Integrating all of this into my own teaching style, my classes are often a melting pot of movement and mindfulness.
I try to come to my mat open to the endless possibilities that are before me and I invite you to do so too. Stepping on to your mat at the beginning of class I hope that you feel as though you are entering a safe space, and that over time as we practice together, you become more attuned to your own inner world. Present in the moment, I encourage you to listen to your internal gauge, find what feels good for you, and move from a place of kindness.
CURRENTLY…
My passion for mountain adventures has led me on travels around the World. Learning and exploring Yoga in Queenstown, NZ, training in the Himalayas in India, teaching in the French Alps and leading retreats around the World.
When I first found Yoga, I didn’t know what it was I was looking for, if anything. Like many people, I was drawn to Yoga for the physical benefits of the body - I also love to go upside down and it seemed like that might be included! But a change happened. A subtle transition of my outlook in life. The way I respond to certain situations, the way I come to the decisions I make, a mindfulness and curiosity that wasn’t there before. The practice of Yoga drew me in and became a part of my life.
Since then, I have delved in deeper looking for more out of this ancient practice, and what I have found is that the benefits are unlimited. So whatever you’re looking for out of it, I always encourage you to be open, allow yourself to explore, and enjoy the journey no matter where you’re at!
